Practice for Bain's online assessment

Bain has no single online test. Which one you sit depends on where you apply. CaseTutor simulates the three formats candidates report most often, so you can practise the one your office uses. In the app, choose your region and we point you to the right one.

What you can practise

Blended assessment (SOVA format)

Reported in the UK, Ireland, the rest of Europe and the Middle East

Time:
60 minutes
Format:
5 sections in one sitting
Tools:
Calculator and scratchpad

Situational judgement, verbal, numerical and logical reasoning, then a short personality questionnaire. No clock is shown on screen, and speed counts towards your score.

Mini-tests (TestGorilla format)

Reported in the US and Canada

Time:
40 minutes
Format:
4 tests, 10 minutes each
Tools:
Calculator and scratchpad

Four separately timed tests: numerical reasoning, business judgement, leadership and people, and problem-solving. Each clock is separate, so time left over in one does not carry to the next.

Mini-cases (HireVue format)

Reported in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand

Time:
32 minutes
Format:
3 mini-cases, then a recorded answer
Tools:
Calculator and scratchpad

Three short business cases with exhibits and multiple-choice questions, then a recorded recommendation on camera.

How your attempt is graded

  • Multiple-choice and numeric answers are scored automatically.
  • In the SOVA format, faster correct answers score more, as candidates report for the real test.
  • In the HireVue format, your recorded recommendation is graded against a rubric (25% of the grade).
  • Every report shows your weakest section and a percentile against other CaseTutor candidates.

Tips for the real thing

  • Ask your recruiter which format your office uses before you start practising.
  • In the SOVA format there is no visible clock. Keep moving and don't over-check.
  • In the TestGorilla format, treat each 10-minute test as its own sprint.

Frequently asked questions

Which online test does Bain use?

It depends on the office. Candidates report a SOVA-style blended assessment in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, TestGorilla-style mini-tests in the US and Canada, HireVue-style mini-cases in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and pymetrics-style games in Germany. Formats change, so confirm with your recruiter.

What is the Bain SOVA test?

A blended aptitude assessment covering situational judgement, verbal, numerical and logical reasoning, plus a short personality questionnaire, taken in one sitting of about an hour.

Does speed matter in the Bain SOVA test?

Candidates report that it does, and CaseTutor's simulation weights faster correct answers more. No clock is shown, so pacing is part of the practice.

Is the practice test free?

Your first full attempt at each module is free with a CaseTutor account, including the full report. Further attempts are part of a CaseTutor membership.
